The Commercial Appeal: The theme of this year's international conference, "Are You Lonesome Tonight? Elvis & the Dysfunctional Family", produced serious discussion of Elvis's personality, his mood swings and his apparent inability to separate psychologically from his mother, to name just a few of the issues scholars were thrashing out in a meeting room at the Radisson Hotel Memphis.
Across town at the University of Memphis Fogelman Executive Center, a conference directed Friday by John Bakke, chair of the U of M Department of Communication, and headlined by popular culture critic Greil Marcus, Presley biographer Peter Guralnick, Sun Records founder Sam Phillips and his son, Knox, discussed "Elvis: The State of His Art".

PRNEWSWIRE: Vernon Chadwick, an internationally known expert on cultural icon Elvis Presley, hosted a moderated forum on Towery Publishing's Memphis Community Network August 4-8. Chadwick, a media figure in his own right, founded the renowned International Conference on Elvis Presley in 1995. The conference brings together noted scholars, writers, musicians, and artists to explore the man whom Chadwick calls the 20th century's most ubiquitous and enduring cultural icon. The conference, much like the Presley family did, migrates from Mississippi to Memphis this year. The third annual conference will be held August 10-15 at the Memphis College of Art, coinciding with Elvis Tribute Week activities.

Second Annual International Conference On Elvis Presley
"Then Sings My Soul: Elvis and the Sacred South" 1996
|
The Daily Mississippian: Second annual Elvis conference will focus on gospel music.
Elvis fans prepare: on August 4-9 the devout of the King will be rolling into Oxford for the second annual International Conference on Elvis Presley. The six day conference "Then Sings My Soul: Elvis and the Sacred South" features performers from around the country, including Mississippi storyteller Jerry Clower, who is this year's host of the festivities, and the Stamps Quartet, who served as Elvis' back-up group in the 1970s, when the King was at the height of his career. Vernon Chadwick, director of the Elvis conference and an assistant professor of English at Ole Miss, said, "This year's conference has a much richer offering than last year. We hope that the response to this year's conference is as good as last year's." In keeping with the religious theme, a large part of the conference is devoted to gospel music.
