  • CHART COMMENTARY from JAMES MASTERTON
(LAUNCH Music on Yahoo, March 13, 2005)
Comic Relief week is upon us once again, or at least it was - Red Nose Day having taken place last Friday. Originally conceived as a one-off famine relief fundraiser in 1986, the Comic Relief charity has now evolved into a biannual televised appeal, each year featuring the cream of British comedy and one or two entertainment stars as well. Also part of the tradition is the concept of an official single promoted by the event which sees all proceeds going to the charity. Originally these singles had a comic theme to them but for the past few years the Comic Relief singles have been little more than colour by numbers cover versions of classic 80s hits, done by some of the biggest acts of the time. Thus in 1999 we had Boyzone doing 'When The Going Gets Tough', Westlife covering 'Uptown Girl' in 2001 and most recently in 2003 Gareth Gates brought a comedy element back to proceedings by teaming up with The Kumars on 'Spirit In The Sky'. All were good enough pop records in their own right (all topped the charts), but all were ultimately rather forgettable.

Thus it is actually a welcome sight to see the 2005 Comic Relief single not only topping the charts once more but doing so as much on its own merits as because of the exposure given to it as part of the appeal. McFly's fifth single is double-sided. First track 'All About You' is easily their most mainstream yet, a gorgeous ballad available in both acoustic and orchestral mixes that deserves to catapult "Busted-lite" into the mainstream in a big way.

... So now to the Elvis single of the week which reverses his recent decline and slips nicely into (an admittedly distant) runners up slot. 'Good Luck Charm' was the King's second release of 1962 and was part of his last brief flowering of stardom before the Merseybeat boom reduced him to little more than an irrelevance. For the moment however there was no stopping him and every one of his singles that year soared to the top of the charts. 'Good Luck Charm' spending five weeks at the top as his 11th Number One single. Back to the present and this release means that Elvis has had 10 Top 3 hits in 10 successive weeks. ...

The song held off competition from late rocker ELVIS PRESLEY, whose single GOOD LUCK CHARM claimed the number two slot, followed by the SUNSET STRIPPERS' hit FALLING STARS, a remix of 1980s ballad WAITING FOR A STAR TO FALL. ...

  • CHART COMMENTARY from JAMES MASTERTON
(Launch Music on Yahoo, March 7, 2005)
What a week. Three bits of chart-related news come to mind before we start this week. First, we have to wait a bit longer for the arrival of downloaded sales into the main chart, the independent labels finally managing to make enough noise about the fact that they find it hard to get onto the likes of Napster and iTunes and persuading the OCC to put integration day back a month for the issue to be resolved .

... Odds on any further Elvis re-releases making the top must surely have lengthened as 'Rock A Hula Baby/Can't Help Falling In Love' becomes the second release in a row to chart at Number 3. In a way this is a shame as the single is easily one of his most famous. 'Can't Help Falling In Love' was originally just the b-side of the single but after a month on the chart the single was listed as a double a-side and before long the credits were reversed. The single shot to Number One in February 1962 and swiftly became an Elvis standard, for years being the song with which he closed concert performances (prior to the famous "Elvis has left the building" announcements). Sadly the single also marked the start of Elvis' crap period when almost every one of his singles came from the soundtrack of the series of increasingly feeble movies that he made throughout the mid 1960s. Both 'Rock-A-Hula Baby' and 'Can't Help Falling In Love' were taken from Blue Hawaii, a film which actually makes later offerings look like masterpieces. 'Can't Help Falling In Love' is one of Elvis' most covered songs, most recently by UB40 who took the track back to Number One in 1993. ...

  • Nelly and McGraw top UK Charts
    Edited By Jonathan Cohen
    (Teen Music, March 1, 2005)
Country and western singer Tim Mcgraw made his first ever entry into the UK chart with his crossover duet with Nelly. The American singer is a massive star in his native America, but had failed to break through in Britain - where he was until recently a virtual unknown - until he teamed up with the smooth-talking hip-hop star for the track Over And Over. McGraw and Nelly knocked Jennifer Lopez's Get Right off the top spot, and beat off competition from other new entries Elvis Presley, Akon and LL Cool J to become British number one. ...

  • Nelly, Doves Cruise To U.K. No. 1
    Edited By Jonathan Cohen
    (Billboard, February 28, 2005)
The U.K. charts have new leaders, as "Over & Over" by Nelly featuring Tim McGraw debuted at No. 1 yesterday (Feb. 27), while U.K. rock trio Doves went straight to No. 1 on the album chart with its third Heavenly/EMI set, "Some Cities." "Over & Over" is Nelly's third British chart-topper, following "Dilemma" featuring Kelly Rowland in 2002 and "My Place"/"Flap Your Wings" last September, but it's McGraw's first-ever appearance on the U.K. bestsellers. After three consecutive No. 2 entries, RCA's series of Elvis Presley single reissues showed slight signs of waning, as the re-release of the King's 1961 No. 1 hit, "(Marie's the Name) His Latest Flame" bowed at No. 3. Last week's No. 1, Jennifer Lopez's "Get Right" (Epic), fell to No. 2. British female pop trio Girls Aloud scored its latest top five single with "Wake Me Up" (Polydor) at No. 4, while "Locked Up" (Universal) by U.S. R&B discovery Akon entered at No. 5. ...

  • Charts - Sunday February 27, 2005 : CHART COMMENTARY from JAMES MASTERTON
    (uk.launch.yahoo.com, February 27, 2005)
Now let's not beat about the bush, the first couple of months of any year are characterised by pop music being a bit shit. Sales are always down as people recover financially from holiday excesses, the grim weather doesn't help either and most people in the industry will cheerfully admit that immediately after Christmas few record companies are in a hurry to race out their best product. ... A measure of just how things are gradually starting to improve is the sight of this weeks' Elvis single making a mere Number 3 as the King is outsold for the second week running by Jennifer Lopez' 'Get Right'. 'His Latest Flame' dates from November 1961 and after the MOR stodge he had been churning out since leaving the army represented a much welcome return to form for Elvis Presley. A more contemporary song, it had originally been given to Del Shannon to sing but when he passed on releasing it as a single, Elvis steamed in and proved that there was life in the old dog yet, the single becoming his ninth Number One hit. It gets even better next week with the re-release of one of his all time classics and a song which was last seen on top of the charts 12 years ago. ...
