- Songwriter straddles the line between sacred, profane: Peter Himmelman
By Regis Behe
(Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, May 26, 2005)
In the 1950s, Elvis Presley was accused of performing music that was inspired by the devil. Musician Peter Himmelman agrees rock 'n' roll is far from sacred. "Elvis was the devil's music," he says, referring to Presley's infamous gyrations. "What else can you call it?" Himmelman performs Wednesday with Israeli band The Flying Baby at Club Cafe. "It's as salacious as it gets, as carnal as it comes. Doesn't erase it for me. I happen to like it, and I know exactly what it is. It's not a joke, and there is a profaneness to it." Few mix the sacred with the profane as well as Himmelman. ...

- Elvis Presley the preacher
(femalefirst.co.uk, May 25, 2005)
Priscilla Presley believes Elvis would have quit showbiz to become a preacher. The 60-year-old beauty: "I could see him going into preaching because that's something he really actually wanted to do from a very young age. He loved preachers. Elvis loved to dramatise everything. I think he could see himself doing that." Priscilla, whose daughter Lisa Marie was once married to Michael Jackson, says she would still fancy Elvis if he was alive today. ...
- PRESLEY ILLEGALLY IMPERSONATED POLICE OFFICERS
(www.contactmusic.com, May 25, 2005)
King of rock ELVIS PRESLEY regularly broke the law by impersonating police officers - to secretly fight street crime. The late BLUE SUEDE SHOES superstar fulfilled his private ambition of becoming a cop, by making fake police badges and taking to the streets with a gun and flashing blue light, to tackle illegal activities. Presley's ex-wife PRISCILLA writes in new book ELVIS, BY THE PRESLEYS, "He had a million badges and a blue police light on his car. He liked nothing more than putting that light on his car and pulling people over. He'd walk up to the window, show off his official badge and say, 'Son, you were speeding. Just want to warn you to slow down.' The driver would see him and remain speechless. He liked seeing himself as a lawmaker and protector of the public. He carried guns, and if he happened to see, for instance, two men fighting at a gas station, he'd drive over and stop the fight. His very presence stopped things escalating."

- COMMENTARY: WHERE HAVE YOU GONE, DADDY-DO DEWEY?
BySHERMAN WILLMOTT
(Memphis Flier, May 25, 2005)
It's been a great year for "Daddy-O" Dewey Phillips. The Memphis dj legend died thirty-seven years ago in 1968, but in this year already, he has received a new tombstone (compliments of Cody Whitehead of Corinth, Mississippi) and has had his incredible life story immortalized in a new biography by Memphis writer and historian Louis Cantor. Cantor's second book, "Dewey and Elvis: The Life and Times of a Rock 'N' Roll Deejay" just came out on the University of Illinois Press. Previous to Dewey, Cantor wrote the excellent "Wheelin' on Beale: How WDIA-Memphis Became the Nation's First All-Black Radio Station and Created the Sound that Changed America". Dewey Phillips is a true legend in a city that has had several. ... "Dewey and Elvis" is another fine read for Memphis music fans, suffering only from the inevitable overlap in (m)any Memphis music histories written today concerning the '50s, Memphis r&b, early rock 'n' roll, and Elvis Presley. Since Phillips and Elvis Presley lives were intertwined -- and both would be much less known without the other -- Phillips' most famous escapades have been covered in Peter Guralnick's two Elvis books. Cantor takes stories in Phillips' life a bit further than Guralnick and does a passionate job placing Phillips in the proper place in r&b and rock and roll history. ...
- Nashville is one hoarse town
By Tom Leonard
(Telegraph, May 25, 2005)
It may be the capital of country music and the town where Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan recorded some of their finest tunes, but singing in Nashville is actually a doggone bad idea. Voice experts and singers say that the town, which sits in a humid, heavily forested bowl where pollens and pollutants get trapped in the air, is so unbearable for allergy sufferers that some artists have either had to delay their recording sessions or move elsewhere. ...
- TV Pitchman for Frosted Flakes Dies at 91
(ABC News / Associated Press, May 25, 2005)
Thurl Ravenscroft, who provided the rumbling "They're Grrrrreeeat!" for Kellogg's Tony the Tiger ads and voiced a host of Disney characters, has died. He was 91. Ravenscroft died Sunday of prostate cancer, said Diane Challis Davy, director of Laguna Beach's Pageant of the Masters. For more than 50 years, Ravenscroft was the affable voice behind Tony the Tiger, TV's popular cartoon pitchman for Kellogg's Frosted Flakes. ... Born in Norfolk, Neb., Ravenscroft moved to California in 1933 to study art. By the mid-1930s he was appearing regularly on radio, and by the late-1930s he was singing backup for Bing Crosby. After military service during World War II, he returned to Hollywood, where he sang with the Mellomen, a group that performed with Frank Sinatra, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney and Elvis Presley.
