    An unemployed Devon man has placed what has been described as one of the most bizarre bets ever at odds of 20 million to one. Ian MacMillan has put 5p on Elvis Presley riding into London on Shergar and playing missing peer Lord Lucan at the men's happens.

    Elvis Presley riding into London on a dead Derby winner to play a fugitive British nobleman in the men's final at Wimbledon. Sounds impossible? One betting barmy Brit doesn't think so. Unemployed Ian Macmillan has been given odds of 20,000,000 to one that the King of rock 'n' roll will one day ride into town on missing wonder horse Shergar for a showdown with Lord Lucan at the home of British tennis, the Sun said on Tuesday.

    Elvis Presley won $5 in the first singing contest he ever entered (at the 1945 Mississippi-Alabama Fair and Dairy Show). Charles Bunch won $1,000 Sunday for singing like Elvis in the first Elvis tribute contest he's ever entered. "It feels great," the reigning king of the Images of the King regional contest said after he won. "I'm amazed that I won. There were other people who were just as good." Bunch, a resident of Hobart, Ind., was one of eight Elvis tribute artists who competed in the final round of the contest, which was held from Friday through Sunday at Centennial Park. There were 16 entrants at the start of the contest.

    Scott Edwards has a new ride, one that's that he's loath to drive. "I don't want to be known as the guy who wrecked Elvis' car," said Edwards, a 30-year-old who grew up listening to The King's tunes on his father's stereo. Edwards won the 1976 Cadillac Eldorado coupe at the San Diego County Fair as part of a scholarship raffle. Scott and his wife, Susie, bought one $5 ticket after seeing the Caddy on display.

  • Disgruntled Elvis impersonator threatens Medical Park Hospital staff, results in a hunk a hunk of burning nothing

    A Texarkana Elvis impersonator is at least partially responsible for causing a few tense moments at Hope Medical Park Hospital yesterday. Early reports indicated that the man had actually entered the building with a shotgun were greatly exaggerated, but emergency responses were implemented nonetheless. As of this morning, the Hope Police Department reported that the incident had been resolved, the man returned to Hope that evening, was questioned, and soon after, released. Hope Police Chief William Brinkworth stated that, while the situation appeared dangerous at first, the firearm in question was nothing more than a black umbrella.

    When will music memorabilia prices go pop? ELVIS lives! Well, at least in the hearts of the singer's many devotees. And as the 25th anniversary of his death approaches next month, there will no doubt be renewed speculation that he is alive and well, working in a bus station in Minnesota. But for those persuaded that Elvis really has passed on, there is consolation in the booming rock and pop memorabilia market. Many items are offered on internet sites such as Ebay. In its music category, operatic items might number ten. Elvis items run to more than 500, while general rock and pop amounts to thousands.

    Celebrating the legacy of Elvis Presley on the 25th anniversary weekend of his passing, NBC will exclusively telecast his second-ever feature film, "Loving You," on Saturday, Aug. 17 (8-11 p.m. ET), in a newly restored and digitally re-mastered version from the original Technicolor film elements, that reveals a young Presley in his prime. In addition, "Loving You" will be broadcast in high-definition television (HDTV) marking the first time that an Elvis Presley feature-film has ever been telecast in this format. Furthermore, throughout the telecast, various NBC stars will present their memories of Presley's lasting impact.

    Twenty-five percent of the 1,000 tickets available for a Sept. 7 Elvis Presley tribute event in downtown Hagerstown have been purchased and organizers expect the afternoon street festival to sell out completely. Tickets for Elvis Lives in Hagerstown have been on sale at the Hagerstown-Washington County Chamber of Commerce since May 1. The chamber has sold 180 reserved seat tickets and 70 general admission tickets. The city of Hagerstown is assisting the Chamber with what organizers hope could become an annual event. Chamber President Fred Teeter said a lot of the ticket sales will be to people who live outside Maryland. Chamber officials said they have contacted more than 75 Elvis fan clubs across the country about the event and some members have indicated they will come. Four Elvis Tribute Artists have been contracted to perform: Jamie Aaron Kelley of Boone, Iowa; Chris MacDonald of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; Doug Church of Battle Creek, Mich.; and Travis Morris of Winthrop Harbor, Ill.

On Aug. 13, Rhino will issue "Elvis: The Great Performances" on DVD, followed by the nine-disc "Ed Sullivan's Rock 'n' Roll Classics," which includes the King's performances, on Sept. 24.

They have been created by Cindy Hazen, who lives in the house Elvis bought just before his music career started to take off. According to Hazen's website, www.elvisstyleseasonings.com, the seasonings are: "Delicious on everything but leather, and maybe strawberry shortcake."

  • Pentagon charge cards used for strip clubs

    At least 200 Army personnel used their government charge cards to obtain hundreds of dollars in cash at strip clubs near military bases, a congressional investigation has found. Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, said the individuals spent the money "on lap dancing and other forms of entertainment," running up a total bill of $38,000. Grassley disclosed the results of the General Accounting Office probe in testimony Wednesday before a House government operations subcommittee. GAO also found that Army charge cards were used for fraudulent purchases of more than $100,000 of computers and other electronic equipment; for fine china, cigars, wine and a $2,250 tree for planting on Earth Day; for cruises and a trip to Las Vegas; and for two pictures of Elvis Presley purchased at his Graceland mansion in Memphis.

    Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl Perkins highlight a two-disc set chronicling the history of Sun Records. Sun Records 50th Anniversary, due August 6 from BMG Heritage, features 44 tracks from producer Sam Phillips's famed Memphis label. The compilation includes Presley's "Mystery Train," Orbison's "Ooby Dooby," Johnny Cash's "Folsom Prison Blues," and Perkins's "Blue Suede Shoes." The set will also feature some of the label's earliest recordings, including its first release, "Driving Slow" by saxophone player Johnny London.

The 19-year-old Elvis Presley impersonator has become a regular on the casino entertainment circuit, just two years after donning a jumpsuit made by his mother for a '70s dress-up day at his school. What started as a lark for the Pontchatoula, La., native has turned into a career.
