  • Yvonne Craig, a.k.a. Batgirl, not haunted by the past
    (Canoe, June 17, 2001)
Yvonne Craig proves it's possible to have a full acting career, date Elvis Presley, be stalked by Howard Hughes, star as a leatherette-clad sex kitten on ashagadelic 1960s TV show, and then put it all in the past and get on with life. Dating Elvis Presley was also coincidental, since the ever-studious Craig had barely even heard of the world-famous heartthrob when cast to co-star in It Happened At The World's Fair in 1963. "My sister Meridel had to tell me who he was, but only because I had lived such an insular life as a dancer. I didn't know he was hot stuff," she laughs. The twosome hit it off, spent a lot of time together and made Kissin' Cousins a year later. "It wasn't the love of your life or the love of his life," she says of the relationship. "It was just kinda hanging out."

Sharon Stone's hubby: 'Stop dragon my toe'
(Philadelphia Daily News, June 11, 2001 - 3rd news item down)
The strange marriage of Nicolas Cage and Patricia Arquette is officially over. Their divorce became final on May 18, according to Los Angeles court records and the New York Daily News. Cage filed for divorce in February of last year, then withdrew his suit when they briefly reconciled. Too good to last, though, because Arquette filed her own petition in November. Now Nic can focus on new galpal Lisa Marie Presley. Cage has longed for the ex-Mrs. Michael Jackson since her 33rd-birthday party in February. He attended with then-girlfriend, Penelope Cruz.

    Lisa's all shook up
(Womans Day [Australian ed.], June 11, 2001, pp 8- 9)
Lisa Marie Presley publicly announced her romance with 37-year old Nicholas Cage on the day he obtained his honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts from California State University, Fullerton. Cage, who describes himself as a "married bachelor", is interested in things Gothic and the dark side. The article describes them as "Hollywood's weirdest couple".

  • It's hardly Terror Inc.: Bin Laden's network is more 'fan club' than GM
    By Kit R. Roane
    (U.S.News, June 11, 2001)
Before four of his foot soldiers went on trial for the 1998 U.S. embassy bombings, Osama bin Laden seemed as dangerous as Lucifer and as omnipresent as evil. But after they were found guilty last week of conspiring in the bombings in Kenya and Tanzania, the notion of a vast, cohesive terrorist organization seemed dramatically overblown. Bin Laden's bloody enterprise had left 224 dead and placed the Saudi millionaire's name at the top of the FBI's most wanted list. But evidence in the trial revealed that bin Laden isn't nearly as powerful as once perceived. "What the evidence shows is that bin Laden has an international network of contacts, but that it's more analogous to the Elvis Presley Fan Club than a corporation like General Motors," says Larry Johnson, a former State Department counterterrorism official.

  • Films capture another Florida
    By STEVE PERSALL
(St. Petersburg Times, June 8, 2001)
The Florida Film Festival begins today and continues through June 17 at locations around Orlando. ... The documentaries Gibtown and Muleskinner Blues toast our eccentric streak with tales of freakish communities while Greg Marcks' short film Lector opens a lost chapter of Ybor City history, when news readers entertained cigar rollers. Both films cultivate an image of Florida as a renegade republic for misfits that started with Elvis Presley's Follow That Dream and continued through last November's election.

  • THE KING IS DEAD: LONG LIVE THE JORDANAIRES: Jerry Presley revue includes Elvis' backup singers
    By BRIAN McTAVISH
(Kansas City Star, June 7, 2001)
When Jerry Presley impersonates Elvis Presley in his "Legends Revue Show" this weekend at Shawnee Mission Park, he'll share the Theatre in the Park stage with a host of musical mimics. Other performers will take on the guises of Roy Orbison, Patsy Cline, Sonny and Cher, Frank Sinatra, Brenda Lee and Lionel Richie. But Presley, who is a cousin of the late King of Rock 'n' Roll, also will have the support of some real living legends. Presley will be joined in song by the famed vocal quartet the Jordanaires -- including original members Gordon Stoker and Ray Walker, who backed up Elvis on "Hound Dog," "Don't Be Cruel," "Jailhouse Rock," "Can't Help Falling in Love," "Return to Sender" and most of the King's other hit recordings from the 1950s and '60s.

"People are proud [Elvis] didn't forget Tupelo," Festival Chairman Gary Bailey said. "People are proud of his success." The rock 'n' roll legend was born in Tupelo on Jan. 8, 1935, and died at Graceland in Memphis, Tenn., in 1977 at age 42. The festival included performances by singers Jerry Lee Lewis and Marty Stuart.

  • Major League Baseball - AL notes: Will Prior knowledge open Twins' wallet?
    BY Larry Stone
    (Seattle Times, June 3, 2001)
Suddenly, prosperity is raining down upon the Twins, who not only have put themselves in strong playoff contention with a superb start, but hold the No 1 overall pick in Tuesday's amateur draft. The baseball world is curious to see if the Twins will stick with their traditional penny-pinching ways and bypass the consensus top talent, USC pitcher Mark Prior. Prior is 13-1 with a 1.54 earned-run average and only 17 walks (two intentional) in 122-2/3 innings. He has been called the best college pitcher in history, and some are speculating he could be ready to join a major-league staff immediately. You have to wonder if Ichiro will lose potential All-Star votes because his name is listed on the ballot as "I. Suzuki", rather than his increasingly familiar first name. Baseball spokesman Pat Courtney says there never was any consideration to breaking form and putting him down as "Ichiro". Said Courtney, "If we had Elvis in major-league baseball, he would have been "E. Presley".

  • Where there's a will, there's a Web site
    By TOM GEARHART
    (Toledo Blade, June 2, 2001)
Wishes and bequests by celebrities, politicians, and historical figures can be found at dozens of "celebrity wills" sites on the Internet. Most of them seem to be offered as come-ons by firms seeking to attract your business, and the same names often pop up at many of the sites, notably Princess Diana, the Grateful Dead's Jerry Garcia, Jackie Kennedy Onassis, Marilyn Monroe, Joe DiMaggio, Walt Disney, John Lennon, Babe Ruth, Richard Nixon, Doris Duke, and baseball's Shoeless Joe Jackson, who left all his property to his wife Katie, presumably minus shoes. Some of the wills are written in dry, legalistic prose, like Elvis Presley's. Others, like Ben Franklin's, offer a glimpse into the personality and affections of the persons disbursing their estates. By far the most intriguing will I came across was the emperor Napoleon Bonaparte's, written April 15, 1821, on the island of St. Helena. Last Will and Testament sites:

  • Elvis Presley Search Engine ElvisFind.com Celebrates Year Two
    By NEKESA MUMBI MOODY
    (URL Wire, June 1, 2001)
Over the last couple of years, the number of websites dedicated to Elvis Presley - the artist whose life ended almost 25 years ago and whose record sales are still growing - has increased dramatically. Several hundred sites, both big corporal as small personal pages, are providing information and more on this still immensely popular singer.

One year ago, Wouter Broekman - a fan from the Netherlands - launched ElvisFind.com. The idea was to provide a searchable portal containing all those hundreds of sites. When sites are submitted to ElvisFind, they will be visited, approved and added to the database. Visitors can then use the search engine - which also gives access to products, news and the web - or the site directory to find specific information about Elvis. All sites listed at ElvisFind.com are reviewed (by content and design) and rated with 1 to 4 stars. This will give the potential visitor a good idea of the site before visiting it.

Elvis(R) quarters delivered a jackpot to the tune of $120,873 on Thursday morning at Soboba Casino in San Jacinto, the largest jackpot to hit Soboba. A local construction worker and avid gambler put on his blue suede shoes and headed down to Soboba Casino Thursday morning. He dropped a few bucks in an Elvis(R) quarters slot machine and The King paid off. How did he feel with the machine lit up as he won the $120,873 progressive jackpot? He was all shook up. Is a vacation to Blue Hawaii in the lucky winner's future? "Nope. I plan to gamble some more," said the lucky winner.
