Australian bushfires
Graceland is thinking of us. The EPE Fan Club Newsletter of 27th January contained this paragraph:

"Please keep Elvis fans living in Australia in your thoughts and prayers. They have been experiencing terrible brushfires near some presidents' and fans' homes. Everyone is safe and none have lost their homes. Please keep those living in these areas in your thoughts and prayers."

Anyone know Bob Stevens?
We received this request from Madeline Burt:
I am looking for a past president of an Australian fan club. He was president for several years in the early 70's and did make several trips over to the US and saw Elvis. He once met him in Las Vegas. His name was Bob Stevens and visited our home twice when he was here. I would like to get back into contact with him, so if anyone knows of him please forward my email address on to him. At the time my name was Madeline Winston and he visited my mother Jane Winston and my sister Margaret Winston. I can be contacted at mburt@cybrquest.com. Thank you for any and all help you can give to me in this quest.

Maurice Gibb, member of disco sensation the Bee Gees, dead at 53
Maurice Gibb, who with his brothers built the Bee Gees into a disco sensation that ruled the charts in the late '70s with hits like "Stayin' Alive" and "More Than a Woman," died Sunday at the age of 53. ... The brothers had nine No. 1 songs, wrote dozens of hits for other artists, and sold more than 110 million records -- placing them fifth in pop history behind Elvis Presley, the Beatles, Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney. ... Janis Joplin, Elvis Presley, Glen Campbell and Jose Feliciano recorded Bee Gees songs, as have newer acts such as Celine Dion and the Fugees. ...

Originally from England, the brothers gained fame as a teen pop group in Australia. They returned to England in the 1960s, and their first four albums contained hits such as "1941 New York Mining Disaster," "To Love Somebody," and their first U.S. number one song, 1971's "How Can You Mend A Broken Heart." They have lived in South Florida since the late 1970s.

Parkes Elvis Revival Festival a Success
Last weekend's Elvis Revival Festival in Parkes, NSW, went very well, according to a report in the Canberra Times on January 13, page 2.

The Festival, which was the 11th in succession, was the biggest so far. More than 100 Elvis Presley lookalikes of various shapes and sizes descended on Parkes. People from Belgium, the United States, England and New Zealand came to this year's festival, as well as the usual contingent of locals and people from around Australia. "The street parade and outdoor concert attracted thousands and gospel church service was filled to overflowing".

News from 14-year old Tribute Artist Sean Spiteri
Sean's recent performances have been at La Casetta Restaurant, Golden Wing Restaurant, Ming Dynasty and some private gigs here and there. ... But the biggest show Sean has done at this time has been at La Casetta Restaurant on New Year's Eve. Sean did a full performance for two hours -- it featured Sean doing three eras of Elvis: the 50s, the "68" Comeback and the 70s.

Sean had very good feedback during this show and had the honour of meeting one of Tom Jones's backing Singers. Sean says its been one of his best gigs this year. But what he is really focused on is his gig at Taylors Lakes Reception on the 1st March. And Sean just says he hopes to do even better in the year ahead, 2003.

Sydney Fireworks on Australia Day
The 9 o'clock fireworks display cancelled at the last minute on New Year's Eve will be held on Australia Day, Sydney's Lord Mayor, Frank Sartor, said. The 10-minute show will feature fireworks launched from barges moored at Fort Denison and Goat Island. In sharp contrast to the classical strains of New Year's Eve's midnight show it will feature a soundtrack comprised of pop artists as diverse as Kylie Minogue, Elvis Presley and George Benson.
