Christmas Lights at "Gracelands" 2002
"Gracelands" at Tingarra Heights [Newcastle, NSW] is always a highlight of the Christmas lights season. People come from as far away as the Central Coast to see the spectacle. Margaret and Allen Spencer look around the Hunter and overseas to come up with a slightly bigger show each year. Every year visitors donate money and it goes to a variety of local charities, including the Rescue Helicopter.

Indira's Elvis Wedding
ABC-TV's Indira Naidoo tied the knot with Mark FitzGerald at a rockin' Viva Las Vegas style ceremony, complete with an Elvis impersonator, impromptu sing-song, champagne and dancing in the aisles. One of Vegas' top professional impersonators, Kent Ripley, crooned "Can't Help Fallin' in Love" and "It's Now or Never" to the merry newlyweds.

Tania Dusink, a member of the Elvis Presley Fan Club Australia [sic - which one?], got engaged while in Memphis during Elvis Week. Her boyfriend Tony Ziino proposed to Tania on the steps of Graceland. He had a ring specially designed for her, which is an 18 karat gold love heart with Elvis' lightening bolt through it in small diamonds. It also has a TLC inscribed on it. Of course Tania said yes. They are planning to get married in Australia and then re-new their vows at the Graceland Chapel during Elvis Week 2007. Congratulations to Tania and Tony!

Elvis vs JXL

BMG USA has deleted the US CD single (as well as the 7" jukebox and 12" vinyl) just as it was getting airplay. The reason, apparently, is that BMG wants people who want this song to buy the 31 # 1 HITS CD in September.

Strange goings-on over Elvis vs JXL:

We've seen BMG UK being accused of "fixing the charts" and the CD not getting far on the Billboard Hot 100 chart because of reluctance by US radio DJs to give the CD playing time.

BMG UK's Official Response to Sid Shaw of Elvisly Yours concerning the deletion of Elvis vs JXL:

Elvis sold 57,000 copies this week down 30%. It will be down another 30% this week (40,000). Gareth Gates will sell between 80,000 - 150,000 copies this week and was always going to be No.1. We have now deleted the single but over 120,000 remain in the stores this week, we allowed all retailers to order up to last Friday. The decision was taken to focus on the No.1's album as this track is the only 'musical' difference from the many 100's of collections released over the last 25 yrs. It is our decision whether to release a single and we can choose when to delete or reissue. We knew the media would get over excited about our decision but the truth is it the right thing for our album and was in no way a 'conspiracy' with our or any other artist.

June 12 2002. Lilo and Stitch

Walt Disney's movie Lilo and Stitch is due for release in Hoyts Cinemas Australia-wide on September 19 this year. The sound track contains several Elvis songs.

Story:

Lilo is a Hawaiian girl who is a little obsessed about taking care of downtrodden animals. Each day, she collects all the soda cans along the beach in Waikiki. She then takes the cans to the local recycling center, turns them in for cash, then uses that money to buy fish food - she gets in an outrigger canoe, paddles out into the middle of the harbor, then begins feeding the fish in the ocean. Meanwhile, on the other side of the galaxy, six-armed alien Stitch escapes just as the galactic tribunal judge is about to pronounce sentence. Zooming through the stars in his cool 1950s-style spaceship, Stitch tries to elude the two bounty hunters who've been sent out to recapture him, crash-landing on Earth, near the beach on Waikiki. Stitch's only hope for eluding capture is to blend in with the locals. He finds that if he folds up one set of arms under his fur, he can pass for a rather strange-looking dog. Lilo comes into the pound where the Animal Control Officer has put Stitch and decides to adopt him. Lilo, her sister Nani and boyfriend get caught up in a crazy adventure as two alien bounty hunters land on Earth to retrieve Stitch.
